Early Detection: A Team-Based Approach

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Michael Seelbach, Wellness Director

Early detection is essential to keeping residents at The Barrymore Senior Living safe and well. Subtle changes in behavior, appetite, mobility, or mood often provide the first sign that something may be wrong. When we recognize concerns early, we intervene quickly, address issues proactively, and help prevent hospitalizations or serious complications. Consistent observation, clear communication, and the confidence to act on informed instincts make early detection a true team effort.

Encouraging Open Communication

I actively encourage staff to speak up whenever they notice even subtle changes in a resident’s condition. Open communication keeps our team aligned and responsive. Team members have direct access to me by cell phone, email, and designated communication mailboxes. In addition, I round at least twice daily and lead our morning stand-up meetings. These touchpoints ensure concerns never go unheard.

Daily Collaboration and Accountability

Daily stand-up meetings play a critical role in early detection. These routine gatherings create space for one-on-one communication and team discussion. Staff share observed changes, review new orders, and address concerns face-to-face. Together, we determine next steps and implement them promptly.

Strengthening Outcomes Through Early Action

When we identify and address changes early, families gain confidence in our proactive approach. Early detection allows residents to remain safely in their apartments longer through timely, personalized care planning. It also helps reduce hospitalizations, falls, and cognitive decline. At the same time, it supports improved disease management, proper nutrition and hydration, and strong regulatory outcomes.
