Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.
One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.
Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.
As Resident Services Director at The Barrymore, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.
A successful move-in experience begins with a warm, welcoming hand. It also begins with the reassurance that questions are always encouraged. At The Barrymore, that means sitting down with new residents as soon as they arrive. It means getting to know them and helping them feel comfortable asking about anything on their mind.

Those early conversations matter. They help new residents feel supported. They also give the Resident Services Director helpful insight into what future residents may need during their own move-in experience. Each welcome becomes an opportunity to learn, improve, and make the next transition even smoother.
Resident Ambassadors play a meaningful role before move-in day even arrives. Several ambassadors enjoy meeting new neighbors when they come in to sign paperwork. That early introduction can help a new resident feel like they already have a connection. It gives them a familiar face and a friend waiting for them.
Some of the most meaningful ways ambassadors welcome someone new are simple and personal. A knock on the door or an invitation to a meal can warm the transition. Likewise, an offer to take another tour after the whirlwind of move-in day can make a big difference. These gestures help residents feel less unsure. They also help them feel more confident as they learn where things are and begin finding their routine.
One meaningful example involved a resident who moved in from out of state. She had never had the opportunity to step inside the community before move-in day. Later, she shared that her passion for becoming an ambassador came from her own experience. She wished she had been able to meet someone who already lived there before she moved in. Now, she wants to help others feel the connection she hoped for during her own transition.
Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they can relate to one another. Sometimes that connection comes from a similar profession or a shared hometown. It may also come from common interests or similar life experiences. Finding those points of connection early can lead to meaningful and lasting relationships.
Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community by acting as cheerleaders. They offer honest, helpful information during the move-in process. In the dining room, they welcome new residents to their tables. They also invite new neighbors to events and help residents become engaged and active on the Arrow App. Through belonging, communication, and resident engagement, they help turn the community into a thriving neighborhood.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.
The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
